Large Diameter Helical Piers - Fundamental Design of Helical Piers and Anchors

Presented by Mr. Josh Lindberg with Helical Concepts, Inc.

ABSTRACT: This presentation outlines projects requiring large diameter helical piles, reviews pipe shaft sizes from 3-1/2” to 7” in diameter and gives insight into projects where these were required. There will also be a brief overview on equipment requirements and alternate options when limited access is present at the site.

Stratum Ground Improvements for Embankments

Presented by Mr. Eden Thomas, P.E. with Tensar

ABSTRACT: When faced with soft foundation soils where expensive piling and other deep ground improvement solutions are not viable or too costly, the Tensar Stratum™ Cellular Foundation Mattress System provides an alternative approach for construction, often delivering savings in cost and time. Used when new embankments and/or heavy loads are sited over weak and variable ground, including waste deposits and brownfield sites, the Tensar Stratum System creates a cellular and stiff foundation platform that reduces the potential for differential settlement and can increase bearing capacity. With Stratum, there is usually no need for excavation and removal of the subsoil; the cellular foundation mattress is constructed directly over the weak soil and filled with granular material to create a competent mattress system

BIO;  Mr. Eden Thomas has a B.Sc. from Mississippi State University and a B.A. from Queen's University. He started his career as a a co-op student with the United States Army Corps of Engineers where he worked on numerous flood control projects along the Mississippi River and tributary area. From 2012-2019 Eden worked in geotechnical consulting along the Gulf Coast. He has experience on a wide range of projects in the municipal, federal government, commercial and heavy industrial sectors. In recent years he has worked extensively with design incorporating geosynthetics. Eden joined Tensar in 2019 as Area Engineer for the Gulf Coast region.
