Tank Foundations
Presented by Mr. J.G. (Greg) Soules, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., P.ENG, SECB, F.SEI, F.ASCE with CB&I Storage Solutions/McDermott
ABSTRACT: All aboveground storage tanks are supported on foundations of one type or another. The foundation type chosen to support an aboveground storage tank is based on the engineering properties of the soils encountered and the economics of foundation construction. In an increasing number of projects, challenging sites are chosen to construct aboveground storage tanks for economic and logistical reasons. Foundations for these challenging sites require both significant geotechnical and structural knowledge to produce quality foundations. Quality foundations are required to ensure good performance of the supported aboveground storage tanks.
The presentation will cover the design and construction of quality foundations for aboveground storage tanks. The topics to be discussed include the importance of the geotechnical investigation and report, a review of the good foundation selection and design practices provided in PIP STE03020 Guidelines for Tank Foundation Designs, the control of tank settlement through the use of proven settlement guidelines, and aboveground storage tank foundation design and construction issues on difficult sites. Issues related with foundations for heated tanks and refrigerated tanks will also be discussed.
The objectives of this presentation are to introduce the audience to the need for a thorough geotechnical investigation and report, to recognize the value of using PIP STE03020 Guidelines for Tank Foundation Designs for the selection and design of aboveground storage tank foundations, to introduce proven settlement guidelines to apply to aboveground storage tanks, and to discuss approaches to the design and construction of foundations on difficult sites. The intended audience are the owners, designers, and constructors of aboveground storage tanks and their associated foundations.
