Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors: Professional Practice Update and Ethics

ABSTRACT: The presentation will provide updates on engineering and surveying ethics and code of conduct, Board activities, rule and statutory changes, and general updates on Board initiatives.


BIO:  Michael Sims, P.E., currently serves as the Director of Compliance and Enforcement with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. He has been with the Board since June 2018. Michael previously was the Special Projects Manager and Manager of Environmental Permits within the Oil & Gas Division of the Railroad Commission of Texas and worked in Air Permits at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. He holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and has been a licensed professional engineer since 2010.

Alternative Ground Modification Techniques

Presented by Mr. Jonathan Dwight, P.E., Mr. Brian McGlynn, P.E., and Mr. Kevin Scott, P.E., with Menard USA


ABSTRACT: The presentation will provide an overview of ground improvement techniques for Gulf Coast soils including Wick Drains, Controlled Modulus Columns, Soil Mixing, and Vibro Stone Columns/Aggregate Piers. Included will be a discussion of ground improvement design, why it is different, what it must consider, and how ground improvement performance can be evaluated.

BIOS: Jonathan Dwight, P.E., is a Vice President for Menard USA. He received his BS in Applied Mathematics and M.Eng. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. Jonathan has been involved in the design, planning, and execution of projects involving ground improvement, grouting, deep foundations, and earth retention across the United States. Prior to joining Menard, Jonathan worked as a Project Manager for its sister company and fellow specialty geotechnical contractor, Nicholson Construction, and also worked in various field roles for a large national general contractor. Jonathan is a member of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.

Brian McGlynn, P.E., is a Senior Estimating Engineer for Menard USA. He has earned a BS from the University of Pittsburgh in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a M. Eng. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. Brian has worked at Menard since 2013, beginning as Field Engineer and now working with the Design, Operations, and Estimating teams at Menard. Brian is a member of ASCE.

Kevin Scott, P.E., is a Senior Estimating Engineer for Menard USA. He received a BS in Civil Engineering from Mississippi State University and practiced as a geotechnical consultant for 17 years in the southeastern US. As a geotechnical consultant, Kevin was responsible for site investigations, construction material testing, and construction observation of commercial, industrial, and transportation projects. Kevin is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama and is a member of ASCE and DFI.
