Composite Rebar Background, Material Properties and Market Acceptance

Presented by Mr. Matthew P. Kero with Neuvokas Corporation

ABSTRACT: Composite rebar is a 30-year-old industry with ACI and ASTM Standards and Specifications that detail it’s use. For years the industry focus has been on high value infrastructure such as bridges where the high strength and zero corrosion of composite rebar can be the primary focus. In recent years composite rebar has been able to reduce cost and look into new markets where those features plus the extremely low weight can be used to reduce overall project cost. Neuvokas has focused on applications like slab-on-grade, foundations, and footers over the last five years and this has opened the door to market growth and acceptance. This presentation will review the background of composite rebar, the industry history, it will review the material properties of GatorBar, and it will provide insight on potential applications for the use of composite rebar.

BIO:  Matt Kero is the VP of Engineering with Neuvokas in Upper Michigan. Neuvokas manufactures GatorBar, a composite rebar that is stronger than steel, lighter than steel, and it can never corrode. Matt is a mechanical engineer that graduated from Michigan Tech in 2006. Matt has over 15 years of product and process development experience with a focus on new products and new markets. Matt is member of the ACI and is active in the 440 committee and he is a member of the ASTM and is active in the D30 composites committee.
