Ground Improvement and Deep Foundations: Overview of the Various Geotechnical Solutions

Presented by Mr. Brian Freilich, Ph.D., P.E., with Keller North America

BIO: Brian Freilich is a Senior Engineer at Keller based out of the Houston office. His current role involves working with project teams across North America to develop design packages to efficiently utilize various ground improvement and geostructural solutions to satisfy project specifications in challenging soil conditions. Brian is also the chairperson of the Keller North American Soil Mixing Product Team, leading an internal team of experienced soil mixing practitioners to help develop and distribute best practices and provide guidance and support for all soil mixing operations across North America. Brian earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering (2004), M.S. in Engineering (2006) and Ph.D. (2009) from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining Keller in 2013, Brian worked as a geotechnical consultant for a global consulting firm focusing on industrial and commercial projects throughout the Gulf Coast. Brian has his professional engineering license in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Utah.

ABSTRACT: With the complex and variable geologic conditions encountered around Texas, engineers need to be familiar with numerous geotechnical solutions to provide clients with the most cost-effective and efficient options. Years of experience designing and installing foundation systems have allowed Keller to provide more efficient and environmentally sustainable solutions that achieve the performance requirements with lower costs and quicker schedules. In this presentation, we will review the types of ground improvement and deep foundation systems typically used around Texas and discuss several case histories summarizing the use and design considerations of the geotechnical systems.
