Beyond the Borehole: Unlocking Subsurface Insights with CPT and In Situ Testing
Presented by Ms. Kelly Cabal with ConeTec
BIO: Kelly serves as Director of Business Development for ConeTec in the US. She is a graduate of the University of Alberta with a degree in Engineering Physics. She has over 20 years of experience in site investigation and Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and enjoys sharing her knowledge through education. She has guest lectured at local universities and works to support women in engineering. She has served as the Executive Director for the California Geotechnical Engineers Association (CalGeo) and is currently on the board of the Los Angeles Chapter of the ASCE GeoInstitute. She has been active in industry organizing two of the previous International Symposiums on Cone Penetration Testing, CPT’10 and CPT’14 and will co-chair the upcoming CPT’27. Throughout her career, she has authored numerous papers and co-authored a popular Guide to Cone Penetration Testing.
ABSTRACT: Accurate site characterization is essential for effective geotechnical design, and in situ testing provides the high-resolution data needed to reduce uncertainty. This presentation will introduce Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), covering the equipment, methodology, and key interpretation techniques for soil behavior type classification. We will explore the added value of seismic CPT (SCPT) for assessing small-strain stiffness and unusual soils as well as dissipation testing for understanding groundwater conditions and permeability. Additionally, we will discuss other in situ tests that enhance subsurface investigations and highlight emerging technologies shaping the future of site characterization. Whether you are new to CPT or looking to refine your understanding of advanced in situ methods, this session will provide valuable insights for optimizing your geotechnical investigations.

Engineering in Houston
Presented by Mr. Wayne Klotz, P.E., D.WRE, with Klotz Strategies, LLC
BIO: D. Wayne Klotz, P.E., D.WRE, ENV SP is currently President of Klotz Strategies, LLC and was President of Klotz Associates, Inc., a full-service civil engineering firm based in Houston, Texas, for 32 years. His 49-year career began with a BSCE from Texas A&M University in 1974 and an MSCE from the University of Houston in 1976. He is a licensed professional engineer in Texas.
In 2011, Wayne was appointed by the mayor of Houston to the Coastal Water Authority Board of Directors and serves as Board President. He has served on the Community Resilience Task Force for the Department of Homeland Security. He chaired the Public Works Transition Teams for two consecutive Houston mayors.
He served as National President of ASCE in 2008 - 2009. Wayne is a founder and Past Chair of the Board of Directors for the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. Wayne was a cofounder and board member of TAG Houston Region. He has served as Officer for ASCE, HCEC, ACECTX, Harris County Flood Control Task Force, the C Club, and the University of Houston and Texas A&M Civil Engineering Advisory Boards. He started the Klotz Associates Endowed Scholarships in Civil Engineering and the Karen and Wayne Klotz Endowed Fellowships in Water Resources at both universities. Wayne served 12 years on the Board of Directors of the Harris-Galveston Coastal Subsidence District.
Wayne became a fellow for the Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) in 2014. Among his awards are the 2012 Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award from the University of Houston where he was also inducted into the University of Houston Academy of Distinguished Civil & Environmental Engineers. UH has named him a prestigious Bridge Builder award. In 2004, he was named a Texas A&M Distinguished Graduate of the Department of Civil Engineering. Other awards include the 2011 Texas Engineer of the Year Award, 2011 Houston Engineer of the Year Award, ASCE National 2005 Edmund Friedman Professional Recognition Award. He has also been awarded the Texas Section and Houston Branch ASCE Awards of Honor. Wayne received the Texas ASCE Lifetime Achievement Award. Wayne is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) and received the AAWRE 2018 Water Resources Practitioner of the Year award. In 2008, he was named Honorary Professor by Ricardo Palma University in Lima, Peru.
ABSTRACT: Over the last 50 years, Mr. Klotz has learned many lessons about the practice of engineering. His presentation will share a number of observations, principles, and anecdotes of how to create a successful career. Come hear the stories of how things really happen, not the things that people say make things happen. You will have time to ask your own questions as part of the presentation.
